History

Lumio Book Lamp was designed in 2013 by Max Gunawan. In many ways it is an outstanding piece of lighting. It is elegant, portable, flexible, hard-wearing and affordable. When closed, it looks like a book with wooden covers. When open, it looks like a book and the light switches on. It can be open up to almost 360 degrees. You can put it on a table open to 180 degrees, or up to 360 degrees. It has a connection belt with which you can have it hanging from above. It sticks to most metal surfaces, so you can have it open stuck on a metal door or wall. It has a rechargable battery so it can be used outdoors. It is also water-resistant.

Elements and Principles

Form is the Element, and Contrast is the governing Principle of this design. The form of a typical book has been applied to create a lamp when it opens. The contrasting expectation of what a “book” should do, and what it does here creates a great element of surprise.

Lumio Book Lamp, while being a technological novelty, has the appearance of neutral elegance. Therefore it will work well with many interiors and outdoor spaces. It will look great in a bedroom or study of a modern house, it will go well with eclectic or vintage rooms. It will look attractive on a side table in a hotel room, foyer or in a bar. It will work well in a garden party, on a balcony or a terrace.
