Mirror Magic – How Using Mirrors Can Work Wonders for Your Home

My friends call me the Queen of Mirrors. I use them to achieve great results in just about any space. If I was told to make only one change in a room, in most cases I would add some type of mirror.

1. Mirrors Appear to Be Windows

If your room is dark, and you think “It would be lovely to have a window on this wall” – why not install a mirror that will pretend to be a window. To increase the impression your mirror is a window, you can choose a mirror framed in a frame similar to the frames of your windows and doors. To go even a step further, you can insert a window-like lattice into your new mirror.

2. Mirrors Bring Light

Mirrors reflect, yes? To increase the impression of light in your room, introduce a sizeable mirror on the wall opposing your window, or on the wall perpendicular to the window. The mirror will reflect light coming from the window. If you have a beveled mirror, or it is framed with mirror frame, also beveled, you will get an additional benefit of light being reflected in different directions, thus creating the impression of vivid light rays filling your space.

3. Mirrors Double or Triple Your Chandeliers, Lamps and Light Pendants

What happens if you have a chandelier and a mirror? Suddenly the mirror gives you a copy of your chandelier. That makes two grand chandeliers in one room. Add another mirror, such as a mirrored wardrobe doors – and you get, depending on the angle, three or more chandeliers in your room.

The same goes for any focal point, including table lamps, wall lights and shiny or white sizeable items. Mirrors will reflect light rays from them at different angles, creating a lively dance of vivid expression.

4. Mirrors Dramatically Enlarge Spaces

Any room will look bigger with a mirror. The bigger the mirror, the stronger the effect. I like having a large feature mirror framed in a massive ornate frame on the feature wall of a room. I tend to paint this wall with dark paint or cover it with dark wallpaper. Dark wall visually disappear into infinity. Hang an oversized mirror with super amazing ornate frames, put a couple of large potted plants or a vase with flowers – and you have achieved a million dollar look there.

5. Side Walls are Great for a Row of Mirrored Wardrobes

This is one of the best tricks for small spaces. I love it. It works best on the side wall (save the wall opposite the entrance for a featured display). Insert a whole row of wardrobes with mirrored doors. Get the wardrobes as tall as possible. The mirrored doors should be as plain as possible – no framing, minimal opening handles, no bevels or any other decorations.

Now you have added a whole mountain of storage space which you can use to store away clutter from many rooms.

Take a step back, stand in the entrance door and ‘Whoa! The room now looks twice as long as it is’.

So you have created plenty of new storage – and the room looks massively bigger. Two for the price of one!

6. Wall and Floor Decorations Made of Lots of Small Mirrors

In the last decade we have seen an outpouring of mirrored wall decorations consisting of many mirrored shapes. Be it a mosaic of mirrors, a wall clock with mirror frame or sun rays, a vase with lots of tiny mirrors or a mirrored side table – any of them will bring light and life to your room. Make sure you don’t use too many of them though. You don’t want a hall of mirrors in your room. I have recently seen many cases when people have gone crazy with mirrored tables in one room. Stay away from that, there is a fine line between chic and tacky.
