ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN: Texture & Pattern

Textures Bring Life to Any Room Renovation

One of the easiest techniques to design a great interior is to play with a variety of textures. You can choose different textures in the same colour, or you can include a choice of textures in the same colour range. Most of these designs will safely render a good interior design. You will have to think about the pattern these textures will create in your room, how you can balance or contrast them.

ELEMENT

Texture is the quality of the surface of an area, its feel, appearance, thickness, roughness. The texture can be perceived (visual) or tactile (physical). In the above image we refer to the perceived texture of the large painting on the ceiling as well as the paintings on the walls.

PRINCIPLE

A pattern is an arrangement of alternated or repeated elements. In this case we refer to the pattern of the visually textured images.

OUTCOME

An interesting pattern has been applied in this posh Manhattan apartment room: the visual texture of the paintings (ceiling and wall paintings) creates the pattern of alternating elements. The feature painting in the ceiling has been reflected in the pattern of a number of relatively small paintings on the wall. The texture of the ceiling painting continues in an alternated way.
