1950’s: Bibliotheque pour la maison de la Tunisie
History
Bibliotheque pour la maison de la Tunisie was designed for a student dormitory in Paris, for Tunisian students in 1952, and it was produced in 1953. There were many of these bookcases designed and produced, with varying colour combinations and layout.
Designed by
Charlotte Perriand (1903 – 1999) was the lead designer. She also enlisted the services of an artist Sonia Delaunay, who helped with colour choices, and Jean Prouvé’s studio, which manufactured the bookcases.
Dimensions
Height 159.5cm, length 352.5cm, depth 53cm – this particular bookshelf. Other bookcases will have different dimensions.
Materials
Varnished wood and varnished sheet aluminum.
Elements and Principles
Colour and Rhythm. The brightly coloured and the neutral wood rectangles create a random rhythm that gives this piece of furniture an energising and dynamic feel.
Manufactured by
Les Ateliers Jean Prouvé, Nancy, France
Used by Designers
The bookcase can be used as a feature element in residential interiors. It will also add character to commercial spaces such as cafes, libraries, schools, or business offices.
Replicas, contemporary interpretations and influences
There are a number of replicas of Charlotte Perriand’s bookcases. She and her team have inspired furniture designers to continue experimenting with the design.
