1970’s: Sistema 61 Lounge System
History
In 1973 Giancarlo Piretti designed the Sistema 61 lounge system: a modular system consisting of cubic blocks that can be configured and re-configured in different arrangements. It was an innovative solution at that time.
Designed by
Giancarlo Piretti (Italian designer, born in 1940 ).
Dimensions
Seating elements: width 61 cm, depth 61 cm, height 41 cm each . Back elements height 67 cm, depth 31 cm.
Materials
Plastic, grey fabric that covers the foam, chrome plated steel clips that join the elements.
Elements and Principles
Form is the design element, and Repetition is the governing principle. The regular 3-dimensional cubic form of each module allows for the principle of repetition to be applied in order to create a different look, and, more importantly, different layout of the modular lounge.
Manufactured by
Castelli company.
Used by Designers
Since 1973 when Piretti designed this iconic Sistema 61 Lounge System, modular lounge systems have become staple furniture of modern living rooms, hotel foyers, luxury bars, shopping centres, waiting rooms and commercial spaces where flexibility of seating arrangements is needed.
Replicas, contemporary interpretations and influences
While there are not many clear replicas of the Sistema 61 lounge system, modular seating furniture has become very popular. There are numerous modular lounge sets available.
