History

The Wagenfeld Table Lamp, also known as the Bauhaus Lamp was created in 1924 by William Wagenfeld who had just joined the company. The brief was to create an industrial lamp.

William Wagenfeld, a 24-year old designer at the Bauhaus workshop in Weimar.

Elements and Principles

Texture is the Element of this design, and Balance is the governing Principle of this design. Modern industrial textures of glass and steel have been engaged to create a perfectly balanced item of the new industrial era.

Tecnolumen manufacture the original Bauhaus Lamp (the Wagenfeld Lamp). The copyright belongs to Prof. Wilhelm Wagenfeld.

Used by Designers

The Bauhaus Lamp has been popular in boutique environments, i.e. hotels, shops, niche places. It has also been used to furnish and decorate business and commercial spaces, as originally intended. Due to the clarity of its lines, the Bauhaus Lamp has been winning its ways to contemporary clean and simple residential spaces as well.

Replicas

Many replicas of the Bauhaus lamp exist and are being manufactured today. The design has remained greatly unchanged, due to its perfect embodiment of the essential Bauhausian features and principles.

Contemporary interpretations and influences

The Bauhaus Lamp has had surprisingly few modern variations – possibly due to its perfect composition it has remained in largely unchanged shape, colour and appearance. The only frequent variation is the one with metal base. This variation was actually also designed by William Wagenfeld.
