Presented above are uniquely Australian Federation chairs. They were crafted around 1890. They are a registered design No 252.  The back top rail features a uniquely Australian theme of kangaroos. At the time of writing (April 2015) four of these chairs are available for purchase from the Whimsical Notions antiques shop in Warrimoo in the Blue Mountains, NSW.

Elements and Principles

Line is the Element, and Repetition is the Principle of this design. Diagonal lines of the backrest and legs, horizontal lines of the carvings on the backrest and on the legs, and diagonal lines of the imprint on the backrest panel create the repetition. Repeated is also the floral pattern on the imprint. The repetition of the lines creates a feel of  supportive strength and predictability.

Australian Federation chairs have been popular in residential spaces since their inception to this day.  Their unique elegance as well as extremely sturdy construction have kept them as iconic chairs of many Australian households. Nowadays they are mainly used in interiors that aim at recreating the nostalgia of characteristically Australian space.
